What is a CoderDojo?
Are your kids between 7 and 14? Then they are welcome to come and try out some programming at CoderDojo Waterloo, which takes place at the Scandinavian School of Brussels one Sunday morning a month. Kids of all abilities are welcome, but they need to register. At this dojo we speak English and French, plus a couple of other languages.
To take part your child needs to bring their own laptop and charger. The children will work online, so please help them create their personal account on https://scratch.mit.edu/.
The next CoderDojos will take place on Sundays between 10.00 and 12.30 on the following dates:
22 January. Registration opens Monday 16 January at 9.30.
12 February. Registration opens Monday 6 February at 9.30.
19 March. Registration opens Monday 13 March at 9.30.
23 April. Registration opens Monday 17 April at 9.30.
21 May. Registration opens Monday 15 May at 9.30.
11 June. Registration opens Monday 5 June at 9.30.
Please note that the number of places is limited and they are allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis. Please cancel your registration/ticket on Eventbrite if you cannot make it. This way you allow more children to join.
If the tickets are sold out, please mail firstname.lastname@example.org and ask to be added to the waiting-list. If spaces become available you will be contacted at the latest the day before the event.
At the CoderDojo we will help your kids learn to create in Scratch, a programming language developed at
MIT especially for children. The CoderDojo coaches gives some tips and tricks to get the
kids started and help-out when someone gets stuck.
Check out some of the projects the kids worked on in December 2014!
The dojo starts at 10.00 and we have a short break to fill up some energy. We kindly ask all parents to bring some snacks (fruits, cakes, drinks) that can be shared by the group .
The last half-hour is dedicated to "show-and-tell", where those kids who wish present their work to the group. Parents are of course welcome to admire everyone's achievements!
Why learn programming?
If you (as a parent) are a beginner to coding - read this blog post by the CoderDojo Foundation's CEO, Mary Moloney.
Help out and share your super-powers
The organisers of CoderDojo Waterloo are a group of volunteers who think it is important that kids
learn some coding. Join us if
you are a parent who wants to get your kids involved, a coder who would like to
help kids learn, or perhaps you're a parent who codes and wants to do both. We also need help with less technical tasks - perhaps you can bring a cake for our break? Our help us find sponsors? We
need your help!
Please note that by registering and participating in CoderDojo activities, you as a parent or guardian agree that pictures can be taken of your children and that this material can be used for publication in the context of communication / marketing of CoderDojo. If you herewith do not agree, please let us know by sending an email to: email@example.com
